Self-Awareness

One of the basic features that we pride ourselves with is self-awareness. By that we understand essentially the ability to communicate with ourselves. It is not enough to know, but to know that we know and to know how we know. It is not enough to be aware, but to be aware of awareness and to be aware how we are aware (19).

Autopoiesis claims that there is no persistent subject of our varying experiences. Post-structuralism uses the notion of the subject-position, an empty slot in a linguistic structure, which enables awareness to take up a position of an observer; this slot is created and conditioned by linguistic rules inherent in a particular language.

What we refer to as to an I is always a reflection, a recollection, a memory, formed by ourselves observing ourselves involved in a process. We can say that we bring forth the multiplicity of our selves just as we bring forth worlds and objects.

(19) “As we know how we know, we bring forth ourselves.” – Francisco Varela.
